Girl's Soccer

A hard-fought game against Massaponax came to a close 6 minutes and 43 seconds early after a lighting delay and dangerous weather Tuesday night, giving the girls soccer team a critical, well-earned 1-0 victory. Joy Piirto had a beautiful finish off a free kick 25 yards out midway through the first half to score the lone goal of the night. Tempers began flaring in the second half, resulting in yellow cards for both teams, but the Albemarle defense remained strong to preserve the clean sheet. Goalkeeper Betsy Haugh had 10 saves earning her ninth shut out of the season. The Patriots (10-0-1, 8-0-1 Commonwealth District) travel to Mountain View next Tuesday before hosting a rematch with Massaponax to round out the week.
